RAPIDLY ESCALATING COSTS REFLECTED IN ROAD ACCIDENT STATISTICS

The Privatisation Unit, as part of its post-privatisation monitoring activities, is concerned with the current escalating rate of road accidents involving Government Vehicles leased from Imperial Fleet Services, and the their implications on the Government Budget.

The PU requested the monthly statistics from Imperial Fleet Services on road accidents involving vehicles leased to Government of Lesotho by Imperial Fleet services and the cost implications for repair of all the vehicles involved.

The cost implications indicate that:

 from July 2002 to April 2003 the number of vehicles involved in road accidents was 660 with cost damages amounting to M8,151,792.00
 six (6) vehicles were stolen during the period resulting in a loss of M724,377.00
 twenty three vehicles were declared write-offs resulting in a loss of M2, 337,758.00;
 in the month of May 2003 there were 84 vehicles involved in accidents and the damages incurred amounted to M1, 125, 494.39

Below are the details of all accidents and costs of loss that occurred from July 2002 to May 2003.
