For immediate Release Wednesday, 15th September 2004. DIRECTOR OF PRIVATISATION UNIT REACHES END OF TENURE 1. Mr. Mothusi T. Mashologu this week reaches the end of his tenure of office as Director of Lesotho Privatisation Unit. He has served as Director of the Unit for a total of eight years beginning in 1996 with an initial two-year contract followed by three renewals of 2 years. He was the first Director of the Unit after its establishment in accordance with the Privatisation Act passed in November 1995. During his tenure of office the Privatisation Unit implemented under the auspices of the Ministry of Finance a major restructuring of the Lesotho economy in accordance with the Government’s radical reforms which touched practically all sectors. 2. The privatisation programme of the Lesotho Government began with the Sale of chronically loss making Lesotho Airways Corporation which became Air Lesotho. Unfortunately the privately-owned Air Lesotho became bankrupt as a consequence of the civil unrest of 1998 which seriously disrupted the operations of the struggling airline. Other privatisations among the several which followed included Vodacom Lesotho and Lesotho Telecommunications Corporation as well as Lesotho Bank and Minet Kingsway Insurance Brokers. 3. One of the major achievements undertaken under the restructuring programme was the establishment of the Lesotho Unit Trust to afford Basotho an opportunity to invest in privatized companies. The Government is currently engaged in the restructuring of the Lesotho Electricity Corporation. 4. Mr. Mashologu is moving to the private sector, and Mrs. Elena Ntšeli, who is currently the Senior Economist at Privatisation Unit will be his successor until further announcement. 5.
